Sore Throat Lingers On......

My sore throat disguised itself yesterday making me think I was quickly over my cold/flu. As soon as I woke up this morning I realized I had not fully kicked this bug yet. I was hoping to run three miles in the morning but opted not to in order to rest myself a bit more.

I met my friend for her sprinting lesson at 7:45 a.m. I coached her for some strides, sprint drills, and fast 100-meter dashes. After her workout I had my 1/2-hour pool workout. Today we focused on arm extension forward and back so that the velocity of my arm would increase as it went through the water. After several drills working on these two aspects of my freestyle swim we worked on floating. I discovered that I do not float at all. My legs start to sink immediately. I thought I could float but it was a pretty sad sight to see me constantly going under. We tried on my stomach and my back and in both cases I sank. I definitely need to work on this aspect of my swimming.

The rest of my day was pretty busy. At practice with the women, I ran an easy 5-mile run. I was wondering if I'd feel horrible due to my lingering sore throat. My throat had been bothering me for much of the day. Yet, during the run I felt fine and even a little better than I had been feeling. I took it very easy and ran in the back of the pack and just talked with some of the women. The women did some strides and drills afterwards. When practice was over I went to the gym and biked for an hour. I wanted to just keep my rpm's above 90 and was able to do that without too much effort. Tomorrow morning I am running with Alison so I have to keep this short so I can get to bed soon.

I know what you mean about not being able to float. Especially the legs! (Not much body fat to keep 'em buoyant)

Mar I hope your throat is feeling better. Liz

Much of floating has to do with head position. I don't float particularly well, but with tweaking my head position I was able to be a competitive swimmer for many, many years.

Hi Blondie, Thanks for the floating advice.. I really am in need of some help. I will try experimenting with my head position. Do you still swim???

Hi Mary, I'm a sinker too. :( I always thought it was about body position or low body fat. Have you ever read Total Immersion?

Blondie, could you provide more details on head positioning? Thanks! Leilani

Hi Leilani, I have not read Total Immersion.. sounds interesting. I will have to ask my swim coach if they have read it. We'll see if I can learn the balance of floating over the next 7 weeks. Thanks for the note!

Mary,
I swim once a month or so. Some of the people I train with are pretty hard core triathletes and are always looking for a partner. It's pretty hard to get lane space at the Y now that swim team has started. I know that it is good cross training with no real impact other than the turns.
