Sat- MA DIPSEA

this morning my brother in law and i ran the ma dipsea. we decided to run the first 20 minutes (including the first big hill --san rafael hill) as our warm up and then run tempo pace the rest of the way...(& when we hit the "del hardo" hill ((which is a very steep 600' climb at least..straight up!!))...just run it to the best of our ability!).

the start of the run was easy. it turned out to be warmer than i expected. i was glad i was only wearing a short sleeve shirt and shorts.

after we hit san rafael hill and we hit the water tower we started to pick up the pace. the next 1200m or so are all downhill..so we were moving...but not all out...the next mile or so was a gradual downhill with a few tiny little uphills. i felt really good on the gradual uphills...better than i've felt in weeks. once i got to del hardo i had already moved ahead of my brother in law and decided to run up del hardo at a decent pace but not all out...b/c i wanted to save something for the last 1.3 miles...home..in the back of my mind i was hoping i'd break the ma dipsea record 49:09 that one of my high school runners has. granted...it's a bit soft...b/c there aren't many people who run this course...and even i don't run after the record that often...but all of those are good enought reasons to think about going after it now and then.

once i hit the top of del hardo hill...i picked up my pace again...cruised down the switch backs and then i had a half mile on the roads left to run. i pushed the lap button on my watch at this time...b/c i was curious what my last 1/2 mile split was...whenever i do this...i think i also pick up my pace...i ended up running 2:55 for the last half mile...and i broke the ma dipsea record...running 49:02! i was happy about that. less than 2 minutes later my brother in law finished. one of these days i ll have to run the entire course hard...and see just how low i can get this record. i'll also have to invite some of my speedie friends to run the course too...so i can go after additional records.
