another chunk or two
Tonight was our concert for spring semester. I had the day off from work,so there was ample time to obsess over how I still cannot handle the faster pieces reliably. Still, I was able to put that out of my mind. We had a great pre-concert rehearsal, and in the actual performance, we got through the first piece ok after a tiny shaky start. And then we got through the first movement of the second piece, the Mendelssohn. And then we kind of fell apart. The second movement is very pretty, and extremely calm-sounding after the first movement, and there's this melodic line that gets passed around among all the sections, and while this is happening, the sections not playing the melody really have to count or else they will fuck up badly. Unfortunately, the conductor led us at one tempo and all four of the sections kind of decided on their own tempos, and finally we got to a section where the violas are really exposed, and I realized I didn't know where I was and it took like 6 or 7 measures of not-playing before I could figure out where to jump back in. And I've only been playing this piece for, um, 3 1/2 months! Anyway, other people got lost too, so the thing just fell apart for a bit, and I never did quite recover. I kept trying to remember my rockband days where I would screw up and just let it go (what else was there to do?) but I never did get 100% of my composure back. Ugh. 3 1/2 months and this is what I have to show for it.
