spectacle

One New Year's Eve between 2001 and 2006, my husband and I stayed away from both bar and party and instead cooked and ate dinner with our best friend who is now dead. We watched some movie on TV, talked and maybe laughed and most certainly drank, and when the neighborhood fireworks started to go off, we realized it was midnight. We walked outside to catch a glimpse of the pro fireworks downtown, and then called it a night, and a year.

This evening Sundance channel is airing a marathon of the new Elvis Costello talkshow, "Spectacle: Elvis Costello With..." As you might expect from its Sir-Elton-John influence, it's fucking awful. Sir Elvis seems bored and detached, even while oversinging. Somehow he induces his interview subjects to ramble - maybe they sense how bored he is with them. The episode with Lou Reed was especially lame, because Sir Lou's a bit of a rambler to begin with.

I couldn't help but think that this would be a splendid way to spend New Year's Eve with our friend, eating supper and drinking and yelling and throwing nerf balls at the tv, because both Sir Elvis and Sir Lou were once huge, huge heroes to us, and now they're being fake people on some arty version of The View. I wish we were all here watching this stupid TV show. But we're not all here, and those of us who are here are instead getting ready to go to a party we're not really in the mood for.
