this has been bothering me
Who was the first person to start doing that annoying "helLLOOO" valleyspeak sort of thing? Did it come from a movie, or was it part of a standup comic's schtick (like "excu-u-use meEE!")? I have checked google and wikipedia but both are strangely silent on the question, or else I just haven't asked correctly. There are huge chunks of pop culture that seem to have happened while I was sleeping.

You mean helLOOO? in that "Duh, wake up already" sort of way? I'm not sure about that one, but there was a funny HELLooooow... from a Seinfeld episode. I don't remember what it was about exactly, but it involved a weird voice and I remember it being quite humorous. I'm not sure that helps.

yes, that's exactly it - like when someone stops in mid-monologue, tilts the head, puts on a rolleyes voice and "says hellLoooo?!?!?! It's like, the 20th century!?!?!?" and you can just hear the !?!?!?! dripping off the ends of the words.
Anyway, thanks for clearing up the mystery. I never watched Seinfeld because I hated that awful bassplaying. When I lived in New York I felt really disadvantaged because I didn't know what the Soup Nazi was.
Nice race this weekend, by the way :-)

A character from Back to the Future, Biff. At least, that's what I think his name was.
"Helloo? Anybody in there? Think McFly, think!"
That's the first time I remember hearing it anyway.
