Smackdown

I certainly appreciate the comments about getting a three month-old to sleep. Our girl has actually been pretty good to us these past few months, but she's been sleeping swaddled up in a bouncy seat next to our bed and we think it's time she learn to sleep unswaddled and in her crib. We started putting her down for naps unswaddled in the crib, and now we're trying it at night, too. Some nights are so so easy and you feel like you've got it all down, and others - tonight for example - serve as reminders that you'd better not be so smug.

Hmmmmm. Where have I heard that before? Oh yes. A few days ago from my friend Kami:

The underlying message is that no matter how many marathons one has run (this was my 41st), it bites you if you don’t respect it.

On another note ... I have picked up a nasty yoga/pilates habit. I'm a DVD junkie, and my mom gave me a four-class pass to a yoga studio here in town. I've been twice and I must say ... it's a good thing I have plenty of self-confidence. I had been practicing my sun salutations almost every day and was familiar with most of the practice before I even went to my first class. But when the class started with the whole class chanting a minute-long memorized Hindu chant, I knew I was in trouble. I love it, though. I know I'll never be as bendy as most of those people, but, as with running, it's so great to see progress with consistent practice.

I did my first yoga class recently (though no Hindu chanting). My husband definitely "out-yogaed" me. As a matter of fact, he was probably the best one in the class (not that it's a competition). I was just hoping people didn't think I wasn't taking it seriously as I was continously falling over or out of position. I think I better spend a little more time on my flexibility.

A flash! Now I remember. We used a baby carrier (with detachable wheels and a flat but reclinable bottom) for the first 3-4 months. After the last meal (between 9-10pm) and all-important burp, we put them back in the carrier (with the bottom at a slight incline to make for better breathing and digestion.) So they were in the bedroom with us but not in the bed. Also we could rock it with our feet while half-asleep which was really comfy... At about 3 months we started literally day by day to put the carrier further and further away from the bed, eventually out in the corridor and finally in their room (they still share room) When they outgrew the carrier, they were already in their room so it was easy to change them to the crib. Once in the crib we did the reverse as far as staying in the room until they fell asleep, gradually progressing out of the room, to finally kids and parents each in their own room. The key was however the carrier which doubled up as a fine bed for the first few months... cheers corrado
Re Yoga. A fried in Toronto told me the literally hot new thing is indeed "Hot Yoga," meaning doing Yoga in sauna or steam bath environment (or maybe simply cranking up the thermostat in the room.) He was very enthused about it...

Hi Jen!

Welcome back, though it seems you've been back for a bit. Your easy and fun running sounds wonderful, and I hope you're surviving the impending arrival of an Austin summer. I have absolutely no sleeping advice for you and MG, I'm about as baby unsavvy as you can get, sorry. :) Glad to see you here again!
