Email to Meghan
I didn't think I was going to have time to blog today, but I wanted to respond to Meghan's last comment, so I decided to shoot off a quick email to her to let her know I was ok. But I just couldn't keep it short! So I figured it was worth a post:
Thanks, Meghan! I didn't even realize there was a running fairy - maybe that's where all my troubles started. I didn't believe.
I'm going to talk to an orthopod if I can today. The thing barely hurts most of the time, but when it's been sitting still for a while and then I try to make it hurt it hurts just as much as it did last week.
I didn't spin yesterday - it was such a bust of a workout day! After reading ALison and Bridget's posts about being careful on the bike and remembering how much the leg hurt after the bike last week I decided to ditch the spinning class *on my way to the gym!* So I decided to go a la Mary and row, but the machine was broken! And then I thought "Nordic Track?" but that thing was broken, too.
This week's going to be tough. I was looking forward to running the Houston half this weekend almost just as much as I was looking forward to the marathon and I have to decide what to do about that. Houston's half is FAST, I'll still be in shape then, and there's much less risk of the leg acting up during a half and causing me to DNF. I might could salvage ONE good race and then just do what I can at Freescale. I just don't know what I'm risking. What if there is a full chance of recovery and some good training and I blow it at the half?
THanks so much for all the support.

Jen, I have been so behind in reading blogs but I just want to add my wishes for a quick recovery! I am so sorry that you have picked up a painful and incomprehensible injury. And that swimming has emotional baggage (which I can totally understand). It is a great way to stay in shape though.
Keep up the positive thinking and I hope you will be back on the roads soon!

Poops-
Just catching up. Sounds like a shin splint. Putting any heat on it? But why call an orthopod? Wouldn't a doctor be more help than a squid?

So, did you see her (the fairy) last night? I hear she sneaks through windows and wears glittery tutus. I spoke with her this morning and told her to keep you on her "frequently visited" list until you get straightened out again.
Next, your Dad calls you "Poops?" Whoa, I think we just learned a big ol' secret about you, Poops. Have a good day, Poops. (I hope you're not offended and I hope you're laughing as much as I am right now.)
That's a tough decision on the Houston half or the Freescale whole. Do you think you will have another opportunity/want to train for another sub-3:00 in the future? Do you stand a good chance to PR at the half this weekend? Would it be okay if racing hard put you deeper into injury (13 raced miles could h-h-h-urt alot after the fact.)? Are you really feeling like this is an "in for the duration injury" or are you noticing change/improvement? Do you think you know what caused it specifically (your 23 miler, a particular workout, overuse, etc.) and is that something you can avoid for the next 5 weeks? Do you think whatever this is can be squashed during tapering and resting? What about getting on prescription antinflammatory and see how your leg reacts to that (might be easier that getting in to get Xrayed/MRIed in the short term)? What about a hearty steroid injection and see what happens? Just brainstorming...
Thinking of you, sending good leg vibes, and thanks for titling your blog entry after me!

Jen, I'm sorry to hear about your leg! I hope you get a chance to see the orthopod and that he says it's only a shin splint.
That is a tough decision to make. If it turns out to be a minor/short term injury, I would forego Houston and still set my sights on a sub 3 hr marathon (wish I could!). Keep us posted.
BTW, you can swim two miles!??! Wow, you're truly awesome!

Jen, fingers are crossed that it just turns out to be something minor and you can run at Austin. Running this weekend may result in a PR, but not fulfilling the more important, long-term goal.
Let us know, keep us posted!
