Running in new places
Yesterday I finally made it to the Mercer Slough. Its one of the places I should have gone to awhile ago. I guess since its half way to Cougar Mountain, I've always just kept driving. Yesterday I was looking for something a little less hilly. Having never been there before made for an interesting run, but it also meant that half the time I had no idea where I was going. There were several large map signs, but none that you could carry with you and once I left the Slough to get an an extra mile I ended up getting an extra 4 plus some serious hills.
Today I had to get up early to beat the rain, but it made easier as since I got to try out the new running gear I bought yesterday. The size L shorts I bought didn't fit though, I guess the 10lbs I put on all went ot my hips. Now I have to make another trip back to the Slough area to exchange the shorts. Like the Seahawks I'm going to XL.
Somehow I managed to make this the 9th straight week of my buildup in milage. I will have to start thinking about overuse injuries soon. Last week we were talking about doing 3 weeks hard then 1 week recovery to protect against injuries and give your body time to adjust to the new stress of higher mileage. I certainly haven't followed that program, but I have had a few short breaks like last week when I had 3 of 5 days off. I also have the advantage of 20,000 miles in the last 10 years. So I don't really start the whole periodization until I get up over 60 miles per week. I certainly wouldn't recommend my build up to most runners, but its working for me so far and I've been working hard to get in lots of stretching and next on the list is to get some of my 6 pack back while losing the 10 lbs I gained since August.

I remember that when I started my first real job, I wrote something about the "bridal path" for one of our publications, and my boss corrected it to "bridle path." Until then, I wasn't aware that the two were spelled differently, but I was embarrassed, because being on the bridal path (or trail, for that matter) is very different than being on the bridle path :-)
I'm glad that you're running so much, you made up a lot of ground on me this weekend, but Monday and Tuesday hurt you in the overall count. I think you are misleading people in talking about wearing XL shorts. If you are that big, it's because you are tall. You may have put on 10 lbs., but you'd have to add another 20-30 pounds before you could even think about calling yourself fat!

well i guess math teachers don't have to be embarrassed about spelling, but I'll try to remember next time.
As for my fatness, I agree that I am not, but 188 lbs is not my competitive running weight either. In college it was 170 so shooting for 178 is a pretty good goal I think. Of course I could shoot for gaining 12 lbs and try to win some Clydesdale division races :)

I like the new look too - and if you keep this up, you will no longer have the slacker's running blog!
That is awesome that you are doing a tri. We will have to compare notes as long time runners doing our first tris this year.
