Still Moving

I'm still moving, can hardly believe its been like a month since I first started moving to Seattle and last night I finally got all of my belongings into my new apartment. No time to unpack though - school starts tomorrow and I have barely begun to get my lesson plans in order, not to mention I need to put some serious time into learning students names. I have 158 students coming in tomorrow. Fortunately I can easily spend 45 minutes introducing myself to them and playing name type games. Then on Thursday the real learning begins.

Rain in Seattle

Not much happening, still looking for the ever elusive perfect apartment. At least the work part (training) of my day is going pretty well. Of course the admins are still looking for a room for me to teach in. So basically running is the only constant for me day to day so far in Seattle.

Will run for cheap apartment!

Two quick notes:

Barb - I think the running is pretty good here. I've only really done 5 or 6 runs in the Seattle area, but they were all pretty good. And like Colorado, there are better runs only a short drive away.

Alison - Thanks for the postcard! My first mail at my new address.

Yesterday I grew tired of driving around looking for apartments so I put on my running shoes and started running through the city looking for someplace to live. It was fairly unproductive, but so was driving and at least I got some mileage in.

I've had trouble getting internet connections, but hopefully that will change once I have a place of my own to live. I did find one pretty nice apartment, but at $750 for 425 sq ft, it isn't exactly a steal!

Yesterday was my first official day in my new school district and yipee they remembered who I was and I'll actually be getting paid at the end of this month.

Strong Start

I'm off to a good start here in the big city. Of course since its all new and I don't have anything else going on, its been easy to take a 30 minute drive to my starting locations. This driving to my run thing will become annoying once I start working.

Anyway on Friday I drove out to run on the Sammamish River Trail, which is more of a biking trail. It was good though, nice and flat, and Alison's favorite, marked miles. I ran about 14 miles going out 7 and back. It was pretty hot and the frequent water fountains helped out. I did "bonk" a little the last 10 minutes, but I averaged just over 7 minutes per mile.

Yesterday, I drove up to Greenlake, the central park of Seattle. It was pretty good except that the loop was only 2.83 miles long and there was a regatta going on so the standing traffic was pretty thick. But still nice to get out and run laps with a couple hundred others.

Sat: 8.5 miles, Greenlake (3 loops)
Fri: 14 miles, Samm River Trail
Thurs: 9 miles, Dam run
Wed: 6.5 miles, Switchbacks plus Logging hill repeats

Moving Day #1

Yesterday was moving day #1. It was only the first day of driving my stuff across the state, but it ended up being a pretty big haul. I filled up a 5x8 trailer and most of the truck hauling the trailer. Somehow I picked the one day in Seattle when it was over 90 degrees! I was fairly successful though in that I came over without much of a plan and ended up getting a good deal on a convienent storage unit, filled it up and made it in to my new "apartment" (more like closet) by 7:30 pm. Unfortunately the truck was not as happy. The radiator nearly exploded as I was trying in vain to find a parking spot near the apartment. Thankfully when I checked it this morning it appears to be in working order.
This morning I moved in my bed. Now I'm researching some activities for the weekend and contemplating a drive over to Kirkland, but I am more than a little scared by the whole traffic scene. I can't go early because they have one of the bridges closed, which means the others are overful. And if I go too late I'll hit Friday rush hour traffic. Basically I think I have from 1:30 'til 3 pm to go over and get back. Of course the whole time I'll be freaking out that the radiator will blow up and I'll be stuck broken down on the bridge! At least its not 90 degrees again today.
Big city life is going to be great!

Fri: ??
Thurs: 9 miles, Dam run
Wed: 6.5 miles, Switchbacks plus Logging hill repeats
Tues: 9.5 miles, Ryan's Loop

Packing

Packing is a pain in my ****! I'm trying to throw away as much as possible, but it just isn't working out very well. I have way too much stuff. A lot of it is fairly worthless, but I just can't tear myself away. My problem is that I am going to have to get a storage unit at a cost of about $75 per month, but I'm only storing about $500 worth of stuff, so in theory if I give it all away I would come out ahead after only 7 months! But I have just enough stuff that I really want to keep that I can't give it all away and end up with enough to not need storage, so then as long as I am getting storage anyway I don't want to give it away. But really who needs 25 years of National Geographic?

As for running, I have felt pretty good lately. Not much speedy running, but good mileage and no big pains. This means I am just enjoying my running. I have a couple races in mind, but nothing major so I think until I get settled in around Seattle I'll just keep doing what I'm doing.

PS - in averaging 59 miles per week for the past 7 weeks, I've lost another 140 miles to Alison!

Tues: 9.5 miles, Ryan's Loop
Mon: Off Day, 0 miles
