Releasing The Hounds

2005 Drinks to date:..154.....Miles: 366

Six miles into my peaceful 160 beats/minute training run this morning, I just couldn't take it anymore. I stopped my watch, took a few seconds to retie my ponytail (I do this when I mean business) and then gave my legs free rein. I wasn't sprinting exactly, but I stretched out my stride, flexing my quads through the middle and pushing off with my toes. I could feel the blood pumping in my chest and I had to consciously inhale a little deeper to keep things working aerobically. About halfway around the bridle path I passed a guy that looked like he didn't want to be passed and had to dig a little deeper to keep him behind me, but it didn't feel too difficult. It felt good.

I finished that last lap about 2 1/2 minutes faster than each of the previous three and felt a little relieved that I'm capable of that. I felt like a runner again. I think I'll make this a new part of my routine....nine miles at 75% effort with a tempo burst for miles seven and eight.

Going fast is fun, but we'll see how I feel about the concept after tomorrow. I've scheduled myself for four miles of quarters as part of the run up to my four mile race in a couple of weeks.
