Busy Weekend

It is soooo much easier to train and stay motivated when I'm training for a marathon. I've been a little bit of a slacker the past month, so I'm trying really hard to stay on track (ha ha). I've been at a bunch of races lately which has helped bring back some of this motivation.

On Saturday, I didn't have time to run in the morning because Brad was running a race very early. I should have just run the race, but I didn't, and now I know better. We had to feed Brad's brother's dog soon after and then dash over to Bentley College for the Boston High Performance Series where we were helping out. When the races were over, Brad and I headed out for a run on an extended loop that Brad often does for his warmup and cooldown on days he has practice. We were flying and I was quite tired at the end of the 35 minutes. I then did 4 tiring strides on the dark track, which told me I had run hard.

On Sunday, we went to the family cottage in Old Saybrook, CT. Around 6 in the evening (after it had cooled down), I did a 7 mile loop that runs along the ocean for quite a bit. It was very peaceful, but by 45 minutes I fell into a shuffle, probably from the previous day's hard effort. We had also spent a good chunk of time cutting down bamboo. If you ever have bamboo in your yard- just move.

I usually have Mondays off, but since I didn't have to work and I love running at the beach, I decided to do a short run and take Tuesday (today) off instead. I ran for 45 minutes and none of it felt good. It didn't help that we ran when we got up, which left me with little rest. My legs are thanking me today. Now I just have to stay motivated. I'm thinking I should find a race, but YUCK!

T(raining)

Beth hit the nail on the head in her most recent entry when she talked about the ability to "think of all these good things to write in your blog when you are running but then by the time you sit down to write them you either (a) forget them or (b) don't feel like writing about them anyway?" I was composing my entry while I was running today, but now I have nothing to say. I really don't do much while I run, except for look around and entertain myself. I'm not one of those people who runs to relieve stress or think things through. When I'm having one of those days, I'm more likely to not run.

I did get honked at 3 different times on my run today, but I didn't give the honkers any reaction. I haven't been honked at in a while. I guess that's what happens when runners re-emerge after being holed up for a week and a half. I've done all my running lately on the treadmill due to the heavy, continuous rain. I really like running in the rain, but not when it is pouring. I say that, but I was too warm five minutes into my run today and was slightly hoping for some rain. I got my wish in the last ten minutes when it began to drizzle.

I also skipped a couple runs recently out of laziness. Brad did make me a mini schedule, but it's hard to stay motivated when you're not training for anything. Actually, I do have to get in better shape for a 4-miler at Mary's wedding so I can help her keep her last name. I'm doing strides (my favorite) twice a week, so at least I'm somewhat on my way.

New Experiences

It's hard to imagine that you can do the same route over and over again and consistently notice something you've never seen before. I don't think we'll be moving for another year, but Brad and I are starting to look at houses/condos. During every run lately, I've been checking out different houses to see what I like (not that we'll be able to afford them). Normally, I must be lost in thought and now, I'm actively aware of my surroundings. Quite different.

I started doing strides this week, which means I'm feeling good. I'm not necessarily ready for track workouts or long runs, but for now I'm feeling better.

I had a crazy experience at the dentist today. It was my first cleaning at my new dentist. They didn't have those bowls with the cup to rinse with, so the hygienist put water in my mouth through one of those straw-like devices and I had to suction it out myself. I also had to hold the suction device throughout my entire cleaning until I was called upon to suction. Does anyone else find this odd?
