Back At It

I get a day off from running today since I have run six days in a row. My mileage isn't up there yet, but I'm ok with that right now. It can be quite difficult getting back into the swing of things. On Saturday, I almost ran a 10k in a neighboring town, but didn't have enough motivation to go there just yet. I happily watched the race while Brad won it (by 4 minutes just doing a tempo run--must be nice). Instead I ran later with Brad while he did a recovery run. It was only a 35 minute run, but after 5 minutes, the goal was to keep up with him. We like to run over to the middle school fields and do a couple 1.5+ mile loops on the grass. In the past, I usually end up slightly behind him, so one day he "made me" stay with him. Since it's only a short run, it's not a big deal and I get to run a little faster than normal. We'll see what happens when my mileage increases because this run wipes me out a little. It will have to be the second run of a double or something in order for me to survive. I was a little tired yesterday, but I managed to run for an hour, my longest run in a while.

Random question (sort of): I'm interested in buying a water bottle holder (name?) for the summer. Does anyone have one they'd recommend? I also noticed you can get them with the bottle upright, diagonal, or horizontal.

I used to work at a running store and we sold quite a few water bottle holders in the summer. I cannot remember the specific brand that we had (maybe it was Nathan?), but people liked the diagonal ones because they seemed to bounce the least. I would recommend trying it on and jumping up and down or running a little with it on . . . just to make sure it's not too bouncy.

I am glad you are back!

I used to carry water around all the time while running in Texas. I have a Camelback waistpack. It holds about 30 oz of water. It works well because you can cinch it tight and it doesn't really shake up and down too much. Also, I have these little holders that slip on water bottles that allow you to keep a water bottle in your hand without having to grip it hard. I don't like these as much as the waist pack, as I can feel the weight of the water on my arms as I run.

I personally like the fuel belt as you can carry water AND another type of drink and it distrubutes the weight well so you don't even really notice you're carrying it. I have actually even raced with it on before (it holds 6 8OZ bottles).

I would go with the camel back option that Meghan mentioned. I have a fuel belt and I never use it because it's too bouncy. I think the ones with the big water bottles are too bouncy too and hard to drink out of. It is easier to drink from the camel back, it's the only thing I can use where I can drink while running.

The local running group has several members doing some sort of bottle, belt, etc. The unofficial survey says: belt with multiple small bottles/containers seems to be the best for flexibility.

Don't need to fill or take them all.
Fill with liquid of choice.
Vary fill of liquid of choice.

Hope this helps!

Hi Caitlin, Nathan products are very good. You can find them at www.nathansports.com
I carry my bottles and use this type of holder:

A product that you might use to carry the water bottle around your waste that is very comfortable is the Elite 1:

Glad to see you are back training. That's awesome. I hope you get a chance to view these products. More soon and keep up the great training.
