W Stands for...
So many words that start with the letter W are appropriate for describing today. First of all, it is Wendesday. Secondly, we had wild weather. Actually, most of the words are words that describe the weather today. I should have known what we might be in for from Beth's description yesterday. It started out sort of sunny, around 8:15 it got really dark. Then it started to snow! We had thundersnow, something that is supposed to be a very rare phenomenon, but we've had three times this winter. It is basically what it sounds like, thunder during a snow. We ended up with about an inch of snow early on. The rest of the morning had intermittent flurries. By the afternoon, the sun was back and the wind was there. This year seems to be windier than any other year I remember.
I didn't get out of work when I wanted. In fact, it was quite late by the time I got home. This put a wrench in my plans since there were a number of things that I wanted to do right after running and before dinner. There was no way to do the errands, so they'll have to wait until another day. I've learned my lesson, last night I didn't get to eat dinner until after 8:00 and was absolutely starved. I went out with the intention of just running easy by feel and that is exactly what I did. No watch, no heart rate monitor. Since it was so windy I knew that the heart rate monitor would freak out when the actual work level wasn't that hard.
I was very lucky that most of the bad headwind was on my way out. There were two segments that I found particularly bad. You know, the kind of wind gust that is so strong that even though you're moving your arms and legs you don't actually make any forward progress. I got in my regular 7 mile loop, which I actually have not done since last Wednesday. Between racing over the weekend and doing the trials on the treadmill on Tuesdays, I haven't been doing my standard loop.
I finally got my massage scheduled. My feet are very tight as are my calves and my butt. It is definitely past time, but I kind of get scared to go for a massage when I'm fighting a cold. I've been known to end up with a full blown illness after doing that.

W stand for... WoW! The weather progression from sun to thundersnow is national geographic material! Plus the wind... For log purposes, it might be fun for someone scientifically-minded out there, to work out wind, snow, surface wetness and other variable coefficients, to calculate what a normal weather run equivalent to a 7 mile run with meteo bursts where you seem to be going backwards... including the extra breath VO2 depletion for all those terrible, terrible expletives which no doubt are uttered in the heat (metaphorically speaking) of the moment.
