Paying Attention to Signals
At this point in my life, I should know that getting to bed early one night does not fix going to bed way too late too many nights in a row. Since I have been increasing my mileage, I need to pay more attention to some of the "little" things like eating right, getting enough water, and getting enough sleep. The amount of water I've been drinking is sufficient for running in the 50 mile a week range, but it isn't enough for how much I've been doing lately. This is pretty clear since there haven't been many stumbling to the bathroom in the middle of the night trips. The drooping eyes around 2:30 every afternoon are a huge signal that staying up at night is taking a toll. Days like yesterday, my body snaps out of it once I get running, but on other days it doesn't.
Today was one of those days where it didn't snap out of the sleepy mode. That's fine, Wednesday is supposed to be one of the easiest days on my schedule. My goal this afternoon was to wear the heart rate monitor with the alarms on and to have the alarm go off for being under the low end of the ideal training range. Mission accomplished, the alarm was going off constantly for having my heart rate around 120. That was exactly what I wanted. Nothing hurt or felt really bad, I was just tired.
It was disgusting out, chilly and damp. I was cold all day which is definitely one of the signals that I've been skimping on sleep. Now my legs do feel a little bit beat up, so I'm going to use the stick and the foam roller to break up some of the tissue. It really is a shame that the need for massage goes up with mileage. I am very lucky that I have a therapist who charges a reasonable rate and gives very good massage. Of course, with how often I go, most therapists would probably give a discount due to volume.
