Not Quite a Track Workout
Given the snow yesterday, working out on the track was basically impossible. Our group doesn't have access to an indoor track, and even if we did, I personally wouldn't do workouts indoors. I have my reasons, but since it doesn't affect me here, I won't really delve into those reasons. The track where we do our workouts was covered in snow from the 15 inches that we got dumped. I jokingly asked J if he had shoveled out lanes 1 and 2 for us today since he still isn't back to work. As if shoveling is something that someone who has a back injury should be doing.
The workout was supposed to be 5 x 800 with a 400 jog, but I was supposed to be doing 6 800s. We had two options, to do the neighborhood loop with 3 minutes on, 1:30 off or to do parkway loops. We did that neighborhood loop a few too many times for my liking, and M also didn't want to go there, so parkway loops it was. The loop is just about 3/4 a mile around, if we're going to be picky, it's about 0.748 miles. When J talked to me about what we were going to do, we couldn't remember where the 800 mark is on the loop. His guess turned out to be a little bit off, so we ran more like 815s. We did a much longer warm up than usual since we had to get down to the loop and we had lopped off a big part of the warm-up for safety reasons. I ran with my tri buddy J, and we sort of messed up early on by going out too fast. It was harder to judge pace since there weren't laps or markers to base pace off of. I took a split for the first 1200 (4:38), but didn't know what it was until we finished. We did the 4.5 miles in exactly 29 minutes. The goal for me was to keep the entire workout up tempo, rather than taking really easy jogs like we have been on the track, more along the lines of how I normally do workouts. The loop was completely clear, but other roads on the way were slushy to icy. The warm down ended up being shorter than we thought, but it still ended up being over ten miles for the night.
Since I have a morning run on tap for tomorrow, I ought to go get stretching since my legs are going to feel this in the morning. Something about running faster than you have in a long time tends to do that to you.
