Getting Kicked When Down

The blows just keep on coming this week. Today was my day off from running as always. I treasure it more when my mileage increases. The rest seems to agree with my body.

It turns out that I had not been to the dentist in almost a year and a half. This is probably due to the sh*t hitting the fan right around this time last year. Anyhow, their office is right next door to us at work and they called me on Wednesday to set up an appointment. The dentist doesn't work on Fridays (must be nice), so I saw my hygenist. In his practice, he tries to have the same person see you each time you visit. It wasn't too painful, my flossing does help with that. As soon as she finished and said, "your home care looks good..." I knew that I was in trouble. The but came. They've been watching my gumlines for years. I started going to this dentist in 1999 and this issue has been around since way before then. She's concerned because they seem to have receded more. I have to go back in two weeks to have the dentist look at my gumline and talk about the possibility of gum grafts. She also wants to check out a possible cavity. They'll know more about that after the full set of films they took today are loaded into the computer.

Great. I made sure she knew that I don't handle needles in my mouth well at all. The first time I had novicain, I screamed so loudly that I had to go apologize to the woman in the next room. This dentist told me that he wanted to be a fly on the wall when I had my wisdom teeth out because I absolutely freaked out when he even brought out the needle. We don't have dental insurance as part of our plan, but if I have to go to an oral surgeon it might be covered. This wouldn't bother me as much if I didn't take very good care of my teeth. I brush at least three times a day, floss every day, and do everything they've told me to do to stop the recession. I think that part of it is genetic since my father has the same problem. I also have very cavity prone teeth. Argh.

Things have got to get better. It's Friday...
