Some Spring Plans

In our effort to try new things, once again, my training is going to be changing some for the early part of the spring. Most of what we will be doing is going to be slower but with higher mileage. This concerns me a little bit when we talk about the goal time for the first race, the only one I really have on my schedule at this point. Most of the speedwork we have slated for before that date is barely at race pace. We will be doing more of it than ever before, so we are trying to go at a strength angle. My assignment for Saturday is to figure out what my average weekly mileage was last year leading into racing season because we are going to try to go on some higher mileage.

So far there is really only one race on my calendar for the spring. There is a second one about six weeks after that. Goals for each race are out there, but making those goals public isn't something that I really want to do. One of the goals is a time goal, the other isn't. The time goal has a much better chance of being on a good day, the other race has a high chance of really crappy weather, so it is a take what you can get kind of goal. There is another race that I am looking at to be my season closer, but the website for that race has not been updated yet-there is only information for the 2005 race, not the 2006 edition.

Before we can get to any of that stuff, I have to finish the build-up we're doing now. Today was another strangely warm January day, but it was cooling off really quickly once we got running. Our workout was the same as last Thursday, warm-up and then the four mile loop with some pick-ups. We pretty much stayed as one big group this time instead of breaking up into smaller groups. This kind of workout is particularly tough for me. I thrive on locking into a pace and maintaining it. Surges nearly kill me. Another problem was that the jogs were a little too slow to be comfortable and when I do that it is even harder to pick up the pace. We did the loop about ten seconds slower than last week, but the second half was much faster than the first half. We did about a mile and a half to warm-down, giving me about nine miles for the day.

My training log from last year is calling me for analysis, should be lots of fun!
