Getting it Over With
All day yesterday I really was not looking forward to running. In the morning it was raining quite hard, in fact we got something like an inch and a half of rain. By mid-afternoon the rain had stopped, but it was super-windy. The thought of going out in cold rain was really not appealing, but running in the wind really isn't all that much better.
I bundled up when I got home and ventured out. My intentions were to do between 6 and 8 30 second to one minute surges during the run to replace the workout that didn't happen on Monday. I got out and had one of those feelings that I hadn't eaten enough at lunch. I keep yogurt, etc. in the fridge at work to eat with my lunch-but I hadn't checked on it in a few days and only had one (for breakfast) left. The cup of yogurt is really what makes me feel like I've eaten enough, so I was a bit on the woozy side. Anyhow, the winds were gusting into the 40 mile per hour range, so doing anything fast was more difficult.
Trying to be an obedient runner, like I am, I tried to do the pick-ups anyhow. One of the jokes is that I'll try to do whatever I am supposed to do, no matter what the conditions are. I did manage 5 (I think), but decided that I felt much better running at a comfortably hard pace. When I got home, I actually stretched. Not the half-assed stretching I usually do, but a good half hour of stretching.
Today I wanted to run in the morning to give me an extra 12 hours or so of recovery before racing tomorrow morning. This morning was a great reminder of why I do not do the bulk of my training in the morning, especially in the winter. I was so cold and my body felt so tired and tight. With the wind chill, it felt like 17 degrees-a far cry from the 50s we had 2 days ago.
The forecast is concerning me quite a bit for tomorrow. It looks like it could be in the 30s, windy and wet. Just being in the 30s is a concern for me-my body does not handle cold well at all. Of course, I whine about sweating and losing so much fluid in the summer, but I can not get warm when it is cold. Throwing in some kind of precipitation (it could be snow) and wind just makes matters worse. Part of the problem is my racing outfit, I don't know what to do with it when it is cold. On the other hand, I do tend to race relatively well when it is cold. My theory is that my body is not as warmed up at the start, even after a long warm-up, so I can't go out too fast. By going out slower, I am stronger and more consistent.
Good luck to everyone racing tomorrow and have a great Thanksgiving!
