Unintended Long Run
Yesterday, being Friday, was my usual day off. Having added a couple of morning runs, therefore increasing my mileage, has made me think that taking the day completely off is probably in my best interest until my body can get used to the extra miles.
Yesterday in the afternoon, I met my mom at the salon where we both get our hair cut. She was getting her hair cut really short. Mom is one of the only women in their late 50s who I know who looks really good with longer hair. Her hair is this beautiful white/silver color and really silky smooth. She thought it would be less traumatic when it falls out to have short pieces come out instead of longer pieces.
After her haircut, I did some shopping. It is really a downfall of mine. I love clothes and especially love to get good clothes on sale. This is the time of year to stock up on nice sweaters! Anyhow, I also had to go to the Verizon store to update my calling plan and decided to get a new phone while I was at it. I ended up with a new camera phone that I still need to figure out how to use.
The only "working out" I did yesterday was about 25 minutes of core exercises before I went to bed. This morning I got up early for our 7 AM long run. My stomach felt really bloated when I got in bed which was a concern for me. It still felt a little bit on the bloated side when I got up. This morning was almost 30 degrees warmer than last week! I didn't have to wear quite as much clothing as I have been recently. Some of the guys we run with even had on shorts!!! No shorts for me, long pants, a long sleeve shirt, a fleece, gloves, and a hat. I ended up taking my hat off towards the end and having to unzip the fleece, but I was comfortable.
The original plan was to run somewhere between 1:40 and 1:45 today. There is a half-marathon in March that I am thinking about running. I was concerned that I would not have any long runs in before this race and I would really like to do well in it. After hemming and hawing with the group on the run, I decided that I would do the full out and back. There was a group planning on 1:25 to 1:30, but the last thing I wanted to do was get back to the school and have to add on 20 minutes. Two or three minutes I can handle adding on, but 20 minutes is almost three miles of adding on. I figured if the run was feeling really bad, I could always throw the towel in early and walk the final mile or so.
Four of us ended up doing the full 16 mile out and back course. It runs along a wooded road, one side of it kinds of reminds you of Dances With Wolves. There is a creek and lots of wooded area, it is really pretty. Anyhow, we run out to a post office/convenience store/gas station area. A and I both had to use the facilities at the halfway point. I thought that my stomach still had the bloating problem, but nothing happened in the pitt stop. We made it out to the turnaround in about 59:20. This was a little bit uncomfortable for me. All four of us tried to stay together on the way out. I knew that to make it up the hills comfortably and feeling strong, I would need to run more of my own pace on the way back. I felt really strong on the way back, especially on the hills. Maybe doing the hill workouts are finally starting to pay off for me. I finished in 1:52:28, coming back significantly faster than going out.
When I got back, J told me that he screwed up so much that I can do whatever I want for the next two weeks. He keeps telling me to back off and let things come to me, but he goes and runs 13 hilly miles today. He's still struggling with injuries. He said, "what kind of leader am I? Telling everyone to take it easy and I can't even do it myself". He did suggest that I go walk some today to shake out my legs from today. I haven't run much over 90 minutes since early October, so this was a bit of a shock to my system.
After running I went to the gym to workout. I rode the stationary bike for an hour while reading Glamour and Marie Claire. I made sure to stretch some after the riding. I think that it helps to work the lactic acid out of my legs. The elliptical does some too, but I tend to work too hard on that. I lifted for about 40 minutes after that. My stomach started to feel weird as soon as I got off the bike. It has calmed down some now, but it could come and go for the rest of the day.
Since we are supposed to have temperatures close to 50 degrees today, I'm going to see if my mom wants to go for a walk sometime this afternoon. Nothing very long, probably only about 15 minutes. If she is not feeling good, I won't force her to do it. The fresh air would be good for her, and the blood flowing would be good for both of us!
