Protein

I was watching a sports nutritionist from Temple on TV this morning talking about foods athletes need to eat. She was comparing what an Olympic athlete needs to eat compared to what a child athlete needs to eat. I know that I don't train at the same level as one of the Olympic runners, but I do know that my training is closer to that than an average person.

Some of what she said confused me. She said that you need carbohydrates to refuel. I do know that. She also said that about 70% of a high level athletes calories should come from carbs. I though that protein helped to rebuild and refuel. She then said that Olympic level athletes need 1 gram of protein for every pound of body weight. Again, I don't train at quite that level, so I though maybe 0.8 grams of protein for each pound, but that still sounds like a lot.

I don't think that I ever come close to that much protein. I have added more protein rich foods and powder to my diet. I don't eat any meat because I don't like the way it tastes and I end up getting sick from it, so I don't get the benefits of the meat. I also don't care for the taste of nuts either, so I really struggle to get protein.

I am working on drinking more water. Starting Wednesday, the day I go back to work, I will definitely be better about it since I walk around with my Nalgene bottle all day and try to drink at least two of it during work hours.
