Welcome to February
So today I have 3 workouts to do - my usual short, easy recover run, a lifting session and a swim that is normally on Saturday but has to be done today since the pool is closed tomorrow due to a masters meet.
Well okay then.
My plan was to do the run/lift in the am before work and the swim in the evening. I mostly came up with this plan because O could come swimming with me if I went at night and it's always fun to have a partner (even if we aren't doing the same workout).
Of course this plan started to go a little awry last night when I woke up around 2 am and heard the ping, ping, ping of freezing rain on our windows. Yuck. I would honestly rather that it just snow because snow is one thing and ice is entirely an other thing.
Sure enough when I woke up (for real) to let Roxy out everything (roads, yard, sidewalks) looked like a sheet of ice. Double yuck!
I waited until O got up before I formed my plan. What I really wanted to do was crawl back in my warm bed, call off work and sleep another 3 hours. But that wasn't going to happen so we moved onto plan B.
Going swimming in the morning probably would have been best but I just wasn't mentally prepared for a swim. I'm generally relatively flexible about adjusting workouts and times, etc... but it was 4:45 am, cold, dark and I was sore and tired from training and I just didn't FEEL like swimming at that given time. I hadn't planned on it and I didn't want to. Plus, O wouldn't be able to go with me. Therefore, we move to plan C.
I next decide that I should just shower and go straight into work and then do all three workouts after work. Nope - I wanted to get at least one workout in before.
Plan D - save the lifting and swim for after but at least get the run in. It was only a very easy 30 minute run and really, how icy could it be? That's about the time I started wishing I lived in Arizona. Or South Carolina.
O made the decision for me when he offered to go on the 30 minute run and if it was too icy well, than we'd turn back. So on with the running clothes we go!
We got all dressed and gingerly stepped out our back door. Okay - not too bad, but definitely a little slick. Problem #1 came when O tried to open our back metal gate to actually get out of the yard. Nope - it was frozen shut! But it didn't take too much coaxing before he got it open.
We jogged easily up the back alley and then onto the roads and discovered that it wasn't so bad afterall. Instead of a sheet of ice it was more like a sheet of slush. Very thick sheet of slush but not too terribly slippery.
And the run was fine. Cold and a bit wet yes, but not dangerous by any means. At one point O and I both stepped in a HUGE, icy puddle that basically numbed my right foot for the whole rest of the run - to which O commented, "well, at least you won't have to ice your feet when you get home!" Good point by you O!
Welcome to February - the worst weather month of all in my opinion. But the good news is, Feburary is also the shortest month of the year! And once March rolls around, although still cold and snowy at times, you get excited to get a 50 degree day every once in a while. And then April? It may rain a lot but there's no more snow. And then summer is right around the corner.
So now I'm waiting for O to get home from work and we'll head to the pool and then do our lifting. We are such a fun couple on a Friday night! :) But I'm thankful and glad that I can be doing this - this running, swimming, cycling and lifting. And doing it with my husband (and dog!). Because although it makes me tired and sore and at times cranky and although the weather is bad and I hate running out in the cold and slush - there's not much else in this world that I would want to be doing MORE than what I get to do every day, right now.
