Feathers Here, There and Everywhere
Although today is my day off work I am on a bit of a tight schedule. I wanted to get in both of my workouts for the day before a dentist (yuck) appointment at 12:15 and then a chiropractor appointment at 2:45.
So I wake up at 5:50 which, considering I usually wake up at 4:45, is still sleeping in but nevertheless a little early for a day off. Regardless, I get myself to the pool for a 55 min pool run. All is well and on schedule.
I head home where I have a 2:15 moderate ride to do. I had already made the decision to do the ride on my trainer because not only was it only about 45 degrees but it was also raining. 80 degrees and rain, yes - ride outside. 45 degrees and sunny, yes - ride outside. But 45 degrees and raining? No thank you.
So I park in the front of the house (our garage is in the back) and enter through the front door and immediately upon entering I notice something is amiss. I had brought my trainer mat upstairs from the basement already (I use the mat when I want to ride in the living room and watch tv) and instantly thought that the little messes of black everywhere in the house were a result of Roxy chewing up yet another one of our carpets.
But I couldn't be so lucky.
Upon further inspection, my mat is just fine but the little black messes? Feathers. Yes, that's right - feathers.
I call Roxy. She comes slinking around the corner with more feathers in her mouth. This just cannot be good.
Long story short, the dead bird that she apparently snatched up on her morning walk with O didn't agree with her and so back up it came. Feathers and all. Just what everyone wants to do in the morning (especially when you are in a hurry) - clean up barfed up dead bird. Okay - I know that's really gross and if you stop reading now and never come back to read my blog again, I will totally understand.
To make matters worse Roxy was extremely protective of her piles of feathers. I finally grabbed her and threw her (not literally of course) outside so I could scrub the carpet in peace. Geez! She's definitely eaten dead birds before (go ahead and try to get it from her once she's snatched it up) but I don't recall her ever getting sick with one. Dear Lord - she will definitely get the bird flu one day. O and I will have it too - you know - after cleaning up feathers throughout all the house...
Luckily she kept her coughed up feathers downstairs so I only had one level of house to clean. And I still hopped on my bike and got in the full 2:15 ride and a shower and a stretch and some lunch before my dentist appointment. Luckily the dentist is about 2 minutes from our house.
Hmm...dogs these days... :)

So that's what she was going after on our walk this morning. It was dark out so I couldn't tell. It must have been a small bird, though, because she put it down (the first time) in one gulp.

I have two words for you O - TIGHT LEASH!!! I don't like cleaning up dead birds!!! (although I know Roxy is way sneaky and tight leash or not she can still manage to scavange a snack or two...)

Ew!
That's pretty nasty! Roxy looks so cute from her pictures, but little do we know that she's a carrion eater and, apparently, barfer.
My dog rolls around in the yard and I look at her and think, how cute. Then she comes in the house and I can smell her and I realize that she's rolled around where some wild animal marked their territory, if you know what I mean. That's not so cute.
Hope things were featherless today!
