Taper Time

Think MC Hammer and skids... :)

Anyway, I got lost again today on the way to work. Turns out third time isn't a charm for me. But I have a theory. A conspiracy theory. I've now convinced myself that the Yahoo Map people are against me and they have made up roads that aren't really there. I swear Michael Road in Deer Lakes, PA does not exist. I swear it. They say it exists to trick me into thinking I can drive on it but it's really not there. O is taking matters into his own hands though. He's going to travel this route tomorrow (I think to prove to me that it's possible). I'll believe it when I see it.

So what the heck - I have a race in 3 days! It's crazy! It's truly been a little hard to believe because our weather has been so poor lately. I find it amazing to think I'll be riding my bike around in a bathing suit soaking wet. I didn't start racing until mid June last year - give me a break. Anyway, because said race is coming up today wasn't the usual moderate ride/speed run. And I gotta tell you, I kind of enjoyed the break from the routine.

First off let me explain the triathlete's racing schedule structure. It seems to me that there are "A" races, "B" races, and "C" races. As a runner I certainly thought of some races more important than others but I didn't necessarily always assign them a letter. Anyway, when I schedule a race in my training schedule I have to say what I want the race to be because that will then dictate what the taper is like. So far my "A" races for the season are Eagleman (half IM) and Age Group Nationals. These will get BIG tapers - as in 10 day tapers. I have several "B" races planned as well - these get 5 day tapers. And then there are races like this weekend - "C" races that only get a 3 day taper and you better be ready to return to action the next day because it's business as usual on Monday.

I'm quite certain at this point that you couldn't possibly be interested in all this. It's a really long way of saying that up until today I did all the "normal" training. Today, the first day of my taper, involved a little of each sport. First this morning - 1000 yds in the pool with a main set of 6x50. Also this morning about a 40 minute ride on the trainer that involved 6x1 min accelerations. Then finally this afternoon a 27 minute run that included 6x30 second pickups. See a trend? :) Let me just say - after doing a 4500 yd swim on Wednesday with a main set of 3600 yds, 1000 yds with a main set of 300 yds is much like a hiccup.

Tomorrow I have totally off. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with myself other than sleep in and enjoy. I don't work tomorrow which is such a blessing. Good thing though - I feel like it's going to take me all day to round up all the "stuff" I'll need for Sunday's race. Sometimes I miss running - it's so much easier when it comes to equipment.

So anyway, that's the story. Here's hoping for weather in at least the 50s in Virginia on Sunday!

I hate to be the one to tell you if you haven't checked already, but the forecast calls for rain and wind on Sunday. Although the way the weather's been in Pgh. lately it shouldn't bother you.
