I Couldn't Have Said it Better Myself
The back cover of the newest Triathlete magazine has my absolute favorite ad of all time. I read the print and thought "did I write that and forget somehow?". The ad is for TYR and is a picture of Becky Lavelle (professional triathlete) sitting in her TYR gear on a bench, wet, elbows on knees, looking down. And the print says:
"We all have to do it. Explain our actions. Make sense of it to somebody that doesn't quite get it. You may even question yourself sometimes, but not for long. No matter how tired you are, how much your muscles ache and joints hurt, you feel better after training and nobody can take that from you. It's just you and your body. THE PLEASURE AND PAIN IS ONLY YOURS. IT'S PERSONAL."
I can't even begin to tell you how much that speaks to me. Especially given my decision to cut back on work some, train a little more, not have children for a while, etc... I've had to explain myself more than once to people that don't quite get it. And I've wondered more than once if what I was doing was right. Sport in and of itself is a selfish endeavor and I struggle with that sometimes. But guaranteed when I'm getting up at some awful hour to go swim in a cold pool, or cycling in the pouring down, cold rain, or running intervals on the track at 7 pm at night because there wasn't any other time to do it, I'll be reminding myself that indeed, the pleasure and pain is mine only and even more so, it's personal.
