Duathlon

I think duathlon is a funny word. I actually don't like it much. I'm not sure why. There's just something weird about it...

Regardless, I did one today. A duathlon that is. It was threatening to rain all day and finally as I was driving home, the skies opened up. I was bummed because for the past two Tuesdays (when I do my bike-run brick) it's rained and I've had to go to a spinning class instead of riding my bike outside. (I know - it's just so tragic, I don't know how I go on!). Anyway, it actually wasn't raining when I got home to Natrona Heights, but it looked like it was going to start any minute. I checked the radar, I thought about it some, I procrastinated, I looked at the radar again, I looked outside - I just couldn't decide if I should try an outside ride or not. I just don't feel comfortable enough on my bike yet to be riding when it's pouring rain and although I wouldn't mind sprinkles, I didn't want to get caught really far away from home in a monsoon.

In the end I took the safe route and opted for a spinning class. Oh well, there's always next week. :)

I did change things up a little though by actually running to the YMCA for the spinning class. The YMCA is less than 2 miles away from our house and I already had the car in the garage (thinking I would be riding outside), so I just ran up (14:20), did my spinning class (1 hour) and then ran back home via a slightly longer route (20:40). My running totalled 35 minutes which I was pleased with. I actually felt pretty good too on my run home, although the fact that it's pretty much all down hill on the way home could have something to do with that.

I've determined that once one gets used to clipless pedals, going back to anything but clipless pedals is no good. The spinning bike was really bothering me today with the cages. I didn't feel like I could get a good "hold" on the pedal. I never thought those little clipless numbers with the shoes would make such a big difference but they apparently do. I've already become a pedal snob.

And somehow again it's already 9 pm! Where in the world does the day go?

Are you able to wear your cycling shoes on some of the Spin bikes? Our Y has bikes with cages and bikes that with SPD and Look pedals. I think that some of them have mountain bike style pedals, but I'm not too familiar with those.
