Whoa Doggie!
Another beautiful day here in Pittsburgh! Sunny and warm, in the upper 70s for goodness sakes! That probably means it will be 38 and raining tomorrow, but I sure enjoyed it today while it was here...
Tuesdays I usually try to spin and then run. Instead of the spinning class though, I did the same loop I did yesterday on my bike. It went a little better today. Getting to know the loop better is key because you know what uphills and downhills are coming and subsequently what gear you need to be in.
Stats:
14.1 miles total (a little less than yesterday because I didn't have to go around the block trying to get my shoes clipped into my pedals!)
56:36 total time
14.95 MPH ave speed
31.18 MPH top speed
I had my running shoes untied and sitting out for when I got off the bike, in an attempt to simulate a real triathlon transition. I got things changed around pretty quickly and took off running. And then I all of a sudden understood why it's hard to be a triathlete. I can't even explain how my legs felt. Not necessarily even tired, just really, really weird. If my life depended on running faster than about 9 minute pace, I'm pretty sure I couldn't have done it. My legs just wouldn't go! I've run after spinning classes but that was with more like a 10 minute break and some stretching too. Regardless, this odd legged feeling lasted for about 7 or 8 minutes and then I started to feel more normal, like I had actually run once or twice in my life before. I ran for 25 minutes total, came home, got a Gatorade, sat down on the cold concrete walkway in the shade and hung out for about 10 minutes. Whoa doggie - that was tough stuff! :)
So now that I'm done icing my feet it's time to take a shower and stretch before I become one tight ball of mess and can't walk tomorrow. Riding on the new bike it making me sore in new places! Tomorrow is just a lifting session, and just in time because my body needs a break!

I'm by no means a serious cyclist, but I've done a few tris and a few dus. The best description I can come up with for the bike to run transisiton is that your quads feel like jelly and you can't lift your legs. It takes a few minutes and then it goes away. It's so exciting to hear how much you enjoy cycling and swimming. Before we know it, you'll be an Ironwoman!
