Massively Miserable
O doesn't think "massively" is a word - but I do, so I'm going to go for it. I wouldn't be surprised if he was right though. I tend to make up words often.
So yeah, today on my run I was M-I-S-E-R-A-B-L-E with a CAPITAL M! But I'll start at the beginning. On my way home from work it started to rain pretty hard, and it was supposed to rain all night, so I knew the outside bike ride was a no-go. Instead I did my core and feet exercises and then headed over to the YMCA for the 5:15 spinning class. Spinning went well. My favorite instructor with the best music was teaching so I enjoyed that. But then it was time to run and it was still raining and it was about 40 degrees, and oh, it was windy too.
I really didn't feel like it but of course I went anyway. That's just what runners do. And it wasn't too bad at first. But the problem is, the YMCA is on a hill so either way you go you have a long gradual uphill to return to the car. When I turned around to head back, oh my, things got bad quick. Not only was it all uphill, but now the wind was in my face, I was soaking wet, I was freezing cold, my legs felt like lead, I kept stepping in huge puddles, and to top things off, I forgot to bring a ballcap so I couldn't really see. Yeah - fun times. I kept telling myself that this is what sets "athletes" apart from recreational exercisers. I'm not sure if I really believed it or not, but at the time it seemed like something to keep me going. I do believe that running in cruddy conditions makes us stronger though, if not physically, at least mentally. And running on garbage-tired legs is something I need to get used to because I'll never have fresh legs during the run portion of a triathlon. Either way, I'm warm now and my belly is filled with pizza and my miserable 30 minute run is becoming but a distant memory. :)
And now it's already 9 pm and soon time for bed. 4:45 am is going to come around very quickly!
