Goals
I've been thinking a lot about goals lately.
The hospital I work for has a big party for the employees that have 100% attendence. Their time frame is the fiscal year vs the calender year so they have the party in July for anyone who successfully didn't call off since the previous July. I didn't get to go last year (I maybe had 2 or 3 call offs?) but had made it my goal to have 100% attendence this year. Well it turns out that I didn't even make it half of the year because I called off today! My cold turned ugly last night - I just felt awful. One of those nights where you sleep about 3 hours because you continually wake up to cough, blow your nose, and just because you are feeling down right crummy. When my alarm went off I actually did feel a little better but knew I would be miserably tired if I did go into work. So I called off, crept under the covers and slept for another 4 hours. Heaven! And after I woke up I laid in bed for another 4 hours reading. Needless to say I'm feeling much better. It's amazing what a little R&R can do!
So at the loss of one goal, I think I'm about to achieve another one. My goal to read 3 books this year took a very encouraging jump today as I finished my 2nd book and only have about 150 pages of my 3rd book to read. At least today wasn't a total loss... :)
And I did still go to the YMCA tonight with O. I really did feel much better so I went with the goal of lifting and only doing the spinning class I had signed up for if I felt okay after the lift. I felt fine so O and I both took the spinning class. And I still feel fine. Good deal!
In other goal news, O and I evaluated our 2005 goals and formulated our 2006 goals last night. We achieved all but 2 of our 2005 goals, one of which was a goal that was for me only, to run under 19 minutes in a 5K and under 40 minutes in a 10K. Given the fact that I've been injured for 9 of the 12 months this year, I'll excuse myself from that goal. :)
Some of our 2006 goals are the same as 2005, but just beefed up. Instead of reading 3 books each we have to read 4 books! (I know, I know...I must start earlier this time! :) Instead of doing 2 outreach activities with the church we are aiming to do 3, etc... And some of the goals are new. I don't have any running goals but instead have made a goal of completing 2 triathlons. We each also added some career goals. It should be interesting. I highly recommend doing this goal thing. I'm very, very driven by achieving goals so it's a very good activity for me, but I think it would work for just about anyone. A lot of our goals aren't necessarily earth shattering but are designed to get us to do stuff we would probably enjoy, but just wouldn't do otherwise (aka reading :).
Anyway, I'm not off to plant my flower. It's an amaryllis that you plant in a pot and it grows indoor. It was a Christmas gift. I know nothing about flowers, or anything that grows in the ground for that matter, so this will be a learning experience. Perhaps one of my 2006 book should be around gardening! :)

I love to read blog posts about goals and similar stuff, and this post is no exception. Great post! Happy holidays, by the way (I'm just catching up on reading)!
