Pool Workout #2

Let me tell you about 3 day weekends. They rock!!! It wasn't that fun when I only had a 1 day weekend last weekend but the reward this weekend is well worth it. :) I slept for close to 9 hours last night. That is all I have to say! :)

I'm not as sore from the spinning as I thought I would be. I may very well retract that statement tomorrow. Sometimes I'm more sore from something 2 days after than the day immediately after. I guess I'll find out tomorrow!

This morning I headed to the YMCA for my 2nd pool workout. I did the following:

300 yd free easy
200 yd kick easy
100 yd free easy

20x25 yd free hard w/5-10 seconds rest
4x50 yd kick hard w/10 seconds rest

300 yd free easy

And that was a lot harder than my last pool workout! It was about double the distance as last time so I'm sure that contributed - this time I did 1600 yds total which isn't even a mile. Geesh. How do those Ironman triathletes do it? :)

After the swimming (which took about 30-35 minutes with the rests included), I ran in the water for 20 minutes with 4x2 minutes hard, 1 minute easy thrown in there to make the time pass. It was a good pool workout overall. I was tired when I was finished.

During my time in the water I started to wonder how triathletes warm up before races. Do they get on their bikes, run a little and get in the water for a quick warmup? Do they just get in the water and warmup, assuming that by the time they hit the bike and swim their bodies will already be warmed up from the swim? I think I might be apt to just run around a little since that's what I know how to do best. Interesting dilemma. Any ideas?

Hope everyone has a great start to their weekends!

To answer your warm up question (and I by no means claim to be the authority on this)...I usually warm up for a bit on the bike first. Starting out nice and easy, then spinning a little harder to get my legs going. I follow this about 10 min. of running. The running is by far my strongest part, so I always want those system sto be ready to go, even though they won't be used for a while. I feel like I have to be more careful with the warm up at Tris though b/c it's generally in the hot/humid part of summer. I don't want to use up too much energy before the race actually starts. I'm not a strong swimmer, so I don't do much in the water. Getting in is enough for me, but I don't know what other people would suggest... :)

Everyone I know has a different warm-up routine for tris. Most people I know like to take their bike out for a little spin and then get off it and jog some. I haven't seen too many people do much swimming as part of their warm up, but it is a good idea to get into the water to see what the temperature/conditions are. You do want to get the blood moving, but by the time you get to the run you will be nice and warmed up.

Spinning kicks my butt too! I like to do it when I take time off from running. The music and having all those other people in the room makes it a great workout because you don't want to be the only one slacking. I think that it's a great thing to add to running workouts because it really gets your heart rate up and doesn't add any pounding to your legs.

Have you looked to see if your Y has a Master's swim team? It could be worth looking into. You could get some good workouts in and have a coach or other swimmers to help you out. It may have a small fee (some do, some don't), but it would give you some new workout ideas. The Master's group around here is pretty much all people doing tris, so it may be worth seeing if your Y does have one.
