No Tights Yet!
I’m not sure why, but every year as the weather starts to get colder, I play a little game with myself. It’s called “lets see how long I can NOT wear tights” game. It’s a pretty dumb game really. Every day I come home, check the weather before my run, and see if I can make it just one more day without pulling out the tights/long pants. I don’t know why I see wearing tights as such a bad thing. I suppose it’s a “no turning back” sort of thing, as in once I start wearing them, I’m doomed to cold temps/biting winds/ice/snow and wearing long pants until May.
Well today I won my game again. Although I was a little wary after such a cold run yesterday, it was much less windy today so I had high hopes. Fortunately it was about 40 degrees and, like I said, not much wind, so I went for the shorts again. It was a pretty good choice. At the very least, it was a better choice than yesterday when I wore shorts and the windchills were in the low 30s.
I did an easy 40 minutes around our neighborhood. Actually anything around our neighborhood is never truly easy because it will, no doubt, involve many big, long hills, but it was a good run nonetheless. Right now I’m mad at my foot. I’m not talking to it I’m so mad at it (is that in any way admitting that I usually talk to my body parts? :) The foot was hurting me throughout the day and then as I started to run I could feel it. But about 5 minutes into the run it started to feel fine and I didn’t feel it again. I wish it would make up its mind, either hurt or not hurt! (preferably not hurt of course :)
On another interesting note, I got a running shoe analysis today from Road Runner Sports. I ordered something from the company about 2 months ago and with my order came a big bag and a questionnaire. The idea was to fill out the questionnaire, all questions pertaining to your current shoes, your training, your injuries, etc…and then send back your answers along with a pair of worn out running shoes in the big bag. They analyze your shoes and that, with your questionnaire answers, helps them to determine which type of shoe is best for you. They also give you examples of shoes that would fit in your recommended category. Well I just got my results back today and apparently I’ve been running in just the right type of shoe (cushioned). Trouble is, Nike doesn’t make that sure anymore (luckily when Eastbay was trying to sell out their stock of that model I bought 3 pairs and I still have 2 stockpiled in my closet). The Road Runner people gave me suggestions for shoes that still exist though, so I’ll have to hold onto that for future reference. That was very nice of the company to do that for me, and for free! I also saw how they donate the old shoes back so that’s also a nice thing. Pretty spiffy!

I think you would have had to break out the tights if you were in Massachusetts today. The temperature was in the teens when I went out this morning - I would have been very impressed (either that or I would have thought you were stupid :-)) if you had worn shorts. I hope the weather warms up so you can keep winning a little longer!

No, I'm not crazy enough to run in shorts in weather below 30 degrees. That's just insanity if you ask me! (of course there are many runners who do it though...)
