Easy Runs and Wedding Bells
O and I did an easy 30 minutes in the rain this morning. I also did my body weight circuit. I was a little on the stiff/sore/tired side when I climbed out of bed but about a mile into our run I started to feel better. It was raining but the wet felt good because it was on the warmer, more humid side. A cold front has made its way through our area so my run tomorrow morning should be nice and brisk. :)
I wore new shoes this morning and I haven't yet decided what I think of them. Nike forced me to try another style of shoe because they discontinued my favorite shoe (as they so often do). The jury is still out on these new ones. They pinch a little at my achilles, never a good thing. I'm giving them a few more days to feel better before I go in search of a different pair. No messing around 2.5 weeks before a marathon! Eventually I want to try Asics because I've heard good things about them, but I don't want to try a whole new brand of shoe before my big day.
In some other, more exciting news, my sister called last night to tell me her and her long-time boyfriend got engaged! I was very excited to hear about that, and excited that she asked me to be her matron of honor (yep, that's right...I'm a "matron", not a maiden!). My sister was my maiden of honor and did an exceptional job of keeping me sane, calm and dressed properly (a harder task than you may think) on my wedding day. I only hope I can do the same for her.
I don't think I've written about my sister B before in my blog. She's a pretty cool sister (but don't tell her I said that). For one, she introduced me to running. She's 4 years older than me, and I basically did everything she did. When she took horse-riding lessons, so did I. She took piano, I wanted to too. And when she joined the cross country team her sophomore year in high school, I couldn't wait to do it when I was in high school. I keenly remember the first run she took me on. Her and her friend A let me tag along on one of their runs which involved running down a huge hill and then back up. I couldn't finish and had to walk back up the hill. Oh the shame. :)
Because of the age difference, B and I never ran on the same teams, but running has always remained one of our biggest bonds. She ran in college and was able to help me through my college years. She had already done two marathons by the time I ran my first so I really sought out her advice/experience. And she's done one ultra, a 50K, so when that time comes for me I'll be looking to her again!
We don't have an awful lot in common now (she's a smartie computer PhD that lives in Raleigh, NC and likes a variety of "cultural" things...and I'm a nutrition bum who likes sports, tv and doesn't know the first thing about literature or computers), but running has always been the common denominator for us. We can always talk about running and we can always go running. Although we don't get to run together often, B is and will always be one of my favorite running partners.
And B is marrying a pretty cool guy too. In fact, D is so cool that one year (when B and D were dating) D came to watch me run the 5K at the Raleigh Relays (he was a student at NC State at the time). Nice enough you think...but this night happened to be about 35 degrees and POURING down rain and it was dark and late and of course the race didn't start any where near the time it was supposed to. I didn't even run well. But I can still picture him standing there watching, huddled under his umbrella and freezing. Now that's devotion. :)
They will make a very good pair indeed!
