A Little Labor on Labor Day
Happy Labor Day everyone, and congrats to all of you who raced today!
I actually had to work today. Labor Day was one of my holidays this year. Darn people...they get sick even on the holidays! But working on holidays really doesn't bother me that much for several reasons:
1) absolutely no traffic on the way in and out (commute one way=20-25 minutes instead of 40-45)
2) the hospital allows all employees to park in the hospital's garage for free, which (as one may assume) is right next to the actual hospital - this is good because I usually park a 10 minute walk away from the hospital and pay way too much to do so
3) holidays are much more relaxed days - we have just as much work to do (if not more) but we are much less concerned about actually finishing the work
4) we get paid time and a half - need I say more? :)
Despite the fact that O didn't have to work today and could have theoretically slept in until noon, he still got up with me at 4:30 am to do my workout. Now that's love if I've ever seen it.
The workout was on the track and was supposed to be 1600-3200-1600 with 4 minutes rest between the first 2 intervals and 7 minutes rest between the second 2 intervals. My trusty training plan said the pace for this workout was to be "slightly slower than 10K effort". I wasn't really sure what that meant, so I decided if 10K pace was 6:20 then "slightly slower" was 6:25-6:30, meaning my goals times were 6:25-6:30 for the 1600s and 12:50-13:00 for the 3200. I must admit, I was a little worried about the 3200 as I really haven't run that long of an interval on the track in a long time.
I started with a 30 minute warmup, and then ended up running 6:22, 12:49 and 6:23. I was pleased. For some reason I have a hard time hitting a goal time right on the nose. This morning it was windy on the homestretch and I may have been over-compensating for that. I can't always use that excuse though. O ran the first and last 1600s with me in their entirety and he also ran about half of the 3200. It was a huge help.
I thought that the rest intervals were a little on the long side. Usually I'm all for more rest, but 7 minutes was a little more than I needed. I jogged some during the rests but still. Regardless, I like to stick to training schedules as closely as possible so I did what the thing said to do! I cooled down for 15 minutes for a total of about 10 miles for the day.

Sorry you had to work this Labor Day, that stinks. I'm sure that you get some of the other holidays off though. O showed true love this morning by getting up WAY before the sun comes up to run with you. You are very lucky to have him as a husband and training partner. I'm always amazed that you can run so fast so early in the morning.

I can't believe you get up so early to do your workouts. That's dedication!

Getting up early isn't so bad. For one, I've always been a morning person. It's always easier when someone else is doing it with you (at least part of the time anyway). It's so much cooler and more enjoyable in the morning and best of all, you get to see some beautiful sunrises! :)
