Missing in academia

Our hotel room was unfortunately very close to the elevator bank and my sleep could have been better last night, but what can you do? I had to get up pretty early (5:30ish) in order to get in a workout before our presentation, and when I left the room, there was a young guy--stinking of mixed drinks--pacing the hallway for some unknown reason (maybe locked out of his room?). In any case, I was glad that he didn't follow me up to the gym.

I was planning to try the elliptical this weekend, but the machine at the hotel was 1) crappy and 2) broken. The bike wasn't much better, but I didn't have much of a choice. I had my iPod and my book so I had enough to entertain me. I biked and did my ab stuff and then I had to get ready for the morning. My knee felt okay on the bike but I noticed later that it was feeling kind of stiff (i.e. swollen). I never know what is going to bother it, but I guess I did a bunch of walking yesterday afternoon.

Our presentation had the misfortune of being scheduled for the very last slot of sessions at a meeting that started mid-week. My colleagues and I (three of us) had only four participants. But they were all very engaged in the topic and we felt like we imparted some wisdom--what more can you ask for at your first academic meeting? It was all over by 10am. I went back to the hotel and met Matt and we grabbed some breakfast at Whole Foods and sat outside near the water to eat. It was amazingly another beautiful day in Baltimore.

We headed back to the big city around noon and ended up taking a long walk in the afternoon. It was warm enough and I had gotten up early enough so that I felt a little fried by the time we were done. I sat down on the couch to read the paper and fell asleep almost immediately--I think it was the perfect thing for me today (as opposed to doing some additional working out/lifting).

Here's to the start of another work week!
