Soaked
When my alarm went off this morning, I could hear the rain pouring down and despite my general enjoyment of running in the rain, I really was not looking forward to a downpour like that. I pressed snooze one too many times and the next thing I knew, it was after 7 and I bolted out of bed and managed to get in about 45 minutes of running before rushing off to a dentist appointment which turned out to actually be tomorrow. Sigh. It didn't sound like it was raining all that hard when I went out, but it must have picked up because I was soaked in no time. I hastily grabbed a long-sleeve shirt when I left and it was a good choice for warmth since the temperature was dropping but a poor one because the shirt was cotton. Yuck--a rookie error that I haven't made in ages. By the time I got home, I felt like I was 20 pounds heavier. My knee was all right today; my pes hasn't been hurting me but still some stiffness in the joint. Probably all the moisture in the air didn't help, either.
I went straight to the dentist from home, found out I had the wrong day, and went to work, where I immediately found out something very sad: a pulmonary medicine fellow had died suddenly playing squash with a colleague in the (Georgetown) gym last night. He was 39 and they don't know exactly what happened, but it sounds like something cardiac because his colleague--also a critical care specialist--and several med students in the gym started CPR right away while waiting for the ambulance but unfortunately could not revive him. Of course this sounds eerily like what happened to Ryan Shay, and it is so terrible. The medical school is having a memorial service for him tomorrow and although I did not know him, I will try and attend just to pay my respects.
It was actually weird going back to the gym tonight knowing what had happened there last night. It was also strange that the gym was completely empty, but then I remembered--there was a basketball game tonight! Unfortunately I didn't have a whole lot of lifting planned after biking a little so I couldn't really take advantage of the free machines.
I'm sure all my fans want to know how "Lars and the Real Girl" was last night. It was definitely odd, and a tad slow, but watchable and enjoyable. I found out afterwards that it was written by one of the "Six Feet Under" writers, and it totally makes sense!
OK, off to stuff my still-wet shoes with newspapers before "Grey's." Matt is on his way back but I will probably fall asleep before he arrives!
