Tired and it's only Monday

Now that I am sitting down and mostly done with the day, I am very tired. It is always hard getting back to work after some time off, but it usually only takes me a few days to readjust. It was also hard to wake up this morning. Luckily it was sunny and I was kind of motivated to get to work at least close to on time since I knew I would have a lot to do, so I managed to snooze only a couple of times.

I had another decent run--not much pain in the kneecap at all except toward the end, and it did not bother me later--and the weather was actually pretty good. Most Eastern/Mid-Atlantic cities had rainy days today, I think (at least based on what my out-of-town friends told me on Google chat), but we had a nice one. My iPod started acting up about 15 minutes into the run and I just shut it off rather than fiddle with it. It is extremely hard for me to keep sweat from getting into the part that connects to the computer, even though I keep it in a "waterproof" neoprene case, so I wouldn't be surprised if it is broken. I'm going to reset it and give it another try tomorrow.

I picked up my orthotics today and wore them while I was in the gym after work. They are definitely going to take some getting used to--for those of you who are lifelong orthotics users, what should I expect? They also made my feet really hot, which sometimes happens when I am breaking new shoes in. In any case, it was nice to be back at the gym after some time away and I got in a good lifting session and a little bit of biking.

Glad you had a great vacation Becky! :)

I got my first pair of custom orthotics in high school - wore them running after only about 1 or 2 days of walking around in them - and then got blisters so badly I probably couldn't run for another whole week! I will never forget that! I've had several different pair of orthotics since then and it's never been as bad but I think the first time is the hardest to get used to! I would wear them around walking A LOT (as in 4 or 5 days) and to the gym some (biking, etc...) before even trying to run in them! And then when you do run in them...only 20 minutes, then 30 minutes, etc... I know it sounds really cautious! Of course that was only my experience...other people probably could wear them running right away! Either way - good luck! :)

Hey Becky,

I enjoyed reading about your trip--it reminded of a lot of things we did on our honeymoon. Teague is down here for a week so I don't know the next time I'll be in DC. Anyway0 what brand orthotics did you get?

hey, just out of curiosity, how often do you use an ipod when you run? i just bought a nike+ to track my mileage and was wondering if other people used this gadget very often.

I just got a pair of custom orthotics and started running in them right away. To this point, there have been no problems, but I'm not running very much yet. The phamplet that came with mine recommended walking around for 2 hours the first day and doubling that amount every day until you're comfortable in them.

i got them 3 years ago to deal with knee pain. (though the solution, in my humble opinion, turned out to be I needed to do PT and increase my quad strength. THAT is when i actually got better). regardless, i've used my orthotics since then.

unlike beth i haven't had any problems with using mine. i really like them. i wore them around a bit for a couple hours, then longer, then did just as she suggested and only wore them for shorter runs. i was "lucky" in that at the time i was only running short (20 minutes or less) anyway so i didn't have to change my orthotics in the middle of the run!

problems arose when they totally wore out and i had to send them in to get resurfaced. um, how was i supposed to run during the weeks-long process that would take? so i ordered a second identical pair (dif color) and THEN sent the first pair back to get fixed up. now that the one pair has been resurfaced and i have it back i have two pairs. i just keep one in my walking around sneakers and one in my running shoes. this way i know i will freak out less if something happens to one pair. and i never check them on airplanes or leave sneakers lying around b/c i would HATE to have them stolen! health insurance paid for the first pair but then i got on the HSPH insurance which was less good so i had to buy the second pair out of pocket. anway, that is neither here nor there until you find out if you like them!

good luck!
