A pretty good run and a nice dinner

Although my hamstring was sore afterwards, I felt pretty good during my run this morning, so I'm thinking of it as a good one. I did the "Becky loop" which I think I also did last Monday. Most of it is pretty scenic because it drops into the park, but I got caught for a couple of minutes across the road from the trail (on the road) and the traffic was so heavy that it took a few minutes to be able to cross. (You can run on the road but it's not safe because it is curvy/windy and a major route for people looking to avoid the main roads into downtown Washington in the morning.) I also almost stepped on a flare that must have been set up from an earlier accident--I turned a corner and smelled something burning but didn't notice it until I was almost on top of it! Ahh, how I have missed the joys of city running (really).

My hamstring didn't feel too tight until I got to work and had been sitting at my desk for awhile and got up to go to the bathroom. I am convinced that I need to strengthen my hamstring before it gets fully better, so I'm going to work on that for the next few weeks and see if it makes a difference. It's always a fine line between making my hamstrings stronger and making them sore.

Work was pretty quiet today so I had a chance to follow all the NCAA XC action online. I entered the Letsrun.com prediction contest about an hour before the races started and of course did horribly. I should rely only on intuition and not rankings. But I was impressed by Colorado on both the men's and women's side today, of course. They always seem to run a smart race at Nationals.

I lifted after work and then met Matt, his aunt, his cousin (her daughter) and her boyfriend at a restaurant downtown. Aunt Iris, a state senator in New Hampshire, was in town for a conference and she is always a lively dinner companion. Topics ranged from Barack Obama's chances in 2008 to Washington's shopping areas. We had a lot of fun and it was great to spend some low-key time with family just a few days before the always-stressful Thanksgiving holiday.
