I'm so sick of this
I'm writing early today to try and make myself feel better about what's going on with my leg. I woke up feeling just as good as I did yesterday--hardly any pain walking around--and left to walk to the bus stop as usual. The bus was about to pull away and I picked up my pace/jogged one step and...my knee totally buckled, sending shooting pains behind my knee and leaving me to wonder if I could even climb on the bus. The weird thing is that the pain is different than it was before. And a lot worse--more acute than chronic. I was almost crying at that point--a combination of the pain and my frustration after having felt so good the last couple of days.
I made it through my swim, but it wasn't pleasant as I had pain every time I bent my knee at all (believe me, I tried not to, even when I turned at the wall.) It was awful. Luckily I had a Barb appt. already scheduled for this morning, so I limped my way there and we discussed what might have happened. She thinks everything just seized up in there when I planted my foot awkardly and it will probably work itself out in the next couple of days. However, she does think that for my peace of mind I should get an MRI to rule out a tear. The earliest I could get was for next Wed. evening, but I'll take it.
I am obviously really upset at this point, but I sound like a broken record. There's nothing I can do but wait, and I'm terrible at that. Anyway, I must get back to work. Happy weekend!

You don't sound like a broken record. You understandably sound extremely upset. Irrespective of what the MRI will say, as hard as it may sound, have you seriously considered taking a real brake until you solve this problem? Should the fear of losing fitness should give way to the need for healing and a stronger restart? You don't lose fitness. It's more like you deep-freeze it and then you need to let it thaw. Cross training of sorts can be a solution to some problems but it is not the solution to all injuries. Some injuries require specific exercise. Others require absolute rest.
Take care, Corrado.

Hey Becky-- This reminded of when I hurt my knee in 2005. Every now and then there would just be a sharp, acute, nearly intolerable pain when I was walking. I vividly remember one time when the pain hit and I just had to stop dead in the iddle of the hall beacuse I couldn't move. I remember my eyes welling with tears because the pain was so bad and I didn't think I would be able to make it the 25 feet away to my office so I could sit down. After I described these incidents to the doctor I got sent for xrays to rule out a meniscus tear. I was 100% positive there must be a tear... but there wasn't. Granted, I was out of comission for 5 months, but that was a year ago and I've been injury free ever since. I also swam to cross train. I gave up kicking off as it sometimes aggravated my knee. Does it ever aggravate yours? It sucks to stop and turn around at the end of each lap, but I figured that I if I was going to give my knee a rest, it needed a total rest from weight bearing exercise.
Hang in there, Beckaroo!

I have been following your story, and from what you write today, it seems that you should not rule out an ACL tear. It's serious. But, my husband has had 3 ACL surgeries on his knee from football and he has the same thing....his knee buckles on occasion...so it's something to investigate. It's definitely treatable...many athletes have had this health issue and come back though it does require some downtime. I am really sorry to be reading about your injury issues though. I can feel how much working out means to you as it does to me. Good luck.
