My tongue hurts

I feel like such a baby complaining about this, but I have the worst sore (or something) on my tongue. It hurts to talk, eat, drink, etc. and it hasn't gotten better during the last couple of days. I especially despise conditions that interfere with eating. I complained about my tongue to Alison but she unfortunately didn't have any concrete suggestions as to what I could do about it. (Neither does anyone else.) Luckily it doesn't interfere with running! I joined Alison for most of her workout today, altering the end of it because I didn't want to do quite as much. We jogged over to the Tufts track and then she did 4 x 2,000 and I did 2 x 2,000 and 2 x 1,600. All were under 6:40 pace, which was a lot faster than I thought I would and could go. My legs felt fine, but my breathing felt constrained. It was almost like I couldn't catch my breath, but not in a working hard sort of way. I was a little concerned about it but I've felt all right the rest of the day, so I'm not too worried anymore.

I was pretty beat on the jog home, but I perked up later in the day. I lifted briefly in the early afternoon and then went to class. Tonight I went downtown to get a pedicure (I have needed one for quite some time!) and stopped into a brand new Whole Foods that I didn't really remember existed on my walk home. It was amazing. Thankfully I was walking and limited myself to small dinner items.

Now I'm home and Matt and I are planning for our trip to DC this weekend. We are trying to make appointments to see various apartments and condos on Sat. and Sun. It should be slightly stressful but we have a lot of good leads so I am excited to see these places in person!

I must have been feeling sympathetic or something because I burned the roof of my mouth on my post-run snack!

Sounds like a canker sore. There isn't much you can do for one once you have it, except avoid acidic foods, which I imagine you're doing. It'll go away on its own, if that's what it is. To prevent canker sores, at least on the tongue, you might try using a toothpaste that doesn't contain sodium lauryl sulfate. Unfortunately, almost all toothpastes do (it's part of what makes the paste foam), but some of the varieties of Sensodyne don't have it. Check the ingredients. Burt's Bees toothpastes also don't contain sodium lauryl but they have a chalky, health-food-storeish texture, unlike Sensodyne. I'm not a dentist, and it's a little dopey to diagnose via blog, but my husband has this problem.

I would try rinsing your mouth out with salt water.

Have a great time in DC! You must be excited to move back.

Hi Becky,

I read your blog faithfully every day. I am impressed by the amount of running you do each day. I just can't imagine that kind of mileage, but then I run considerably slower.

Anyway, when I was a college student many years ago I also would get sores on my tongue, probably due to the college diet. I found that yogurt was easy on the tongue and there are benefits to the active cultures that help to tame any bacteria that may be causing or exacerbating the sore. You are lucky, there are much better flavors of yogurt available now than 20 years ago when I was in college.

Also, yogurt is good for you, easy for most people to digest and high in carbohydrates. I eat yogurt before races, it's good fuel that doesn't slosh in my stomach.

Sort of sounds like I have a vested interest in the yogurt industry doesn't it? Not so but good reviews come from all corners.

Good luck with the cure.

Keep running, don't forget that rest is as important as training.
