Trying something new
I have never been one for following a training schedule. At least not one that's in a book. I kind of have an idea in my head about what I should be doing based on what's worked for me in the past and what my training partners (past and present) did or do. I have Jack Daniels' book and some others on my bookshelf, but I'll confess, I haven't gotten through them. I'd much rather just follow what other people do and if I see improvement, then I like that particular training technique!
This line of thinking led me to join Alison for some tempo (and that's Jack Daniels' tempo) miles on the indoor track this morning. I rarely do 2 speed workouts in a week, but for a long time I've wanted to add in a tempo component. It's tough when you do your hardest effort on a Wednesday, the way it is with my DC club. But for now I am sticking with Tuesday hard efforts, so today was a good day to try the tempo miles. I didn't enjoy the first two very much, but we were extremely consistent and by the last two, I was finding my rhythm. (Alison has done a lot of "T" work so she was better at knowing the right pace to run. Therefore, I stayed on her heels for 4 miles!) My biggest annoyance was a couple walking in Lane 1 of the track. They finally got the idea to move out after we passed around them about 16 times. I am so track-centric that I forget the rest of the world doesn't know the etiquette!
By the time I got home from the run, I was really tired. A brief nap in the late morning helped. I had some work to finish up and then I went to pick up Matt from the train station. He's finally back from tons of interviews but he had a symposium to go to this afternoon and evening so I've barely seen him. Still, it's good to know he's back, at least until the next interested firm comes calling!
Tonight I went for a run with Mary. I am really impressed with the way she is keeping up with swimming, biking (on her trainer) and running during the first few months of her pregnancy. And no matter what she says, her pace isn't that slow. We tried our best to avoid the icy patches tonight since it was getting dark. We both stayed on our feet, yay! I'm glad we got to run; it was fun.
OK, that's it for me. A couple of things to do for my running club Web site and then I will read and go to bed. Happy (almost) Friday!
