An 'A' for effort

Well. The workout was attempted this morning, but neither I nor my faithful workout partner Mary felt like ourselves or could hit the paces we managed quite easily last week. I'm guessing this was mainly due to the stifling humidity (we hit the track just as the sun was coming out, too) but the heavy/dead leg factor was also at play (half marathon PR for Mary on Sunday; long run on Sat. for me.) The workout was 4-6 times a mile alternating marathon and tempo pace. Although our watches didn't reflect it, our efforts were right on and in fact it felt to me like a tempo run a lot more than a speed workout, which I guess it was. Anyway, the times aren't important and it really didn't go as well as my workouts have in the past three weeks or so (since it's been marginally cooler, anyway) so I'm going to just move on--I was due for a sub-par week anyway.

My hip/groin is still bothering me when I start out runs (or get up from sitting and walk around, for that matter.) I had this once before and traced it back to something I did on the adductor (or abductor, I always forget which is which) machine. So I will avoid that for awhile, keep massaging it with the foam roller and take Advil. It is a particularly difficult spot to get to with the foam roller, unfortunately.

I lifted tonight and amazingly got to use the bench press--it's been constantly in use by the burly MIT students (really) the past couple of times I've been there. I did the rest of my usual routine, minus any leg stuff because I feel like my legs have been especially sore from just running a lot and I don't want to make them angry at me!

Today I accepted a part-time job at a research institute affiliated with my school. I will be doing communication stuff not unlike what I've been doing for the NYRRF since the summer. I like the people there and I think it will be a good way to keep up with the childhood obesity prevention field because this place does research on using school-based exercise programs to prevent obesity. I actually wrote my application essay for my public health program about it, but I am just now getting around to figuring out how it works. Better late than never!
