Birthday fun
It was hard for me to get up this morning because I didn’t have much sleep and I was sort of dreading another hot long run. But, I had plans to meet Alison at my beloved Rockefeller for a run, so the anticipation of company and conversation eased the pain of waking up pretty early. My plan was to run for about 2 hours, but I didn’t have a set route in mind so I was okay with being flexible on the time as long as it was fairly close. I tried not to complain so much about how hot I was, but it was hard. Alison reminded me that my summer discomfort is her winter discomfort, which was good for me to remember. Everyone has a weather nemesis.
We ended up stopping the run at about 1:45 when we got back to our cars and I didn’t really feel like doing another loop of something. I felt better than last week on the hills but still a bit sluggish because of the heat. Still, I think I might be acclimating at least a tiny bit, and that makes me happy. I was glad that I got to give Alison a tour of my favorite running location, as she had never been there before. We had some good conversations and she didn’t seem to mind when I had to stop a few times to address a water bottle problem. (Today I carried my double bottle holder and I needed it! I froze one of the bottles full of Gatorade, too, which was heavy but nice and cool for a good portion of the run.)
After the run, Matt and I headed over to his mom’s house, where we were having a little pool party with our local friends. It was sort of for my birthday but sort of just a casual summertime cool-off session. It turned out to be a really fun day and I got to hang out with one of my Cornell friends who I don’t see very often. Matt’s sister surprised me with a subscription to US Weekly, too, so all the ladies at the party had some fun poolside reading! And I also got another awesome present that I totally didn’t expect—at least not from Matt’s mom—an iPod Shuffle! I have the big iPod and love it, but it isn’t too feasible to run with because it doesn’t like to be jostled and it doesn’t like the amount I sweat. I think having the Shuffle will complement the regular one very well and might help me through some of my longer runs I do by myself this summer. I should work on finding headphones that are more running-friendly as well.
Before heading back to Brooklyn, we stopped to see Matt’s grandparents and had dinner at my parents’ house. I didn’t get to nap all weekend so I can’t wait to go to bed!
