Good progress
I decided last night that instead of swimming in the morning like I did before the track workout last week, it was time to try to get back to my regular routine of doing a short, easy run in the morning. So that's what I did, and it was fine except for a pesky piece of dirt in my shoe that I had a hard time getting rid of. The weather seemed humid in the morning but got better as the day went on.
Later in the day, I was proud of myself for just about finishing a paper so I rewarded myself with a nap. Honestly, I wish I could nap every day. I do wake up a little groggy, but once I get moving again I usually feel very refreshed.
Finally it was time to jog up to the track. I brought some Gatorade with me this time since no one seems to be able to find a water fountain even though Tufts just redid their track and it's gorgeous. I wasn't expecting to see any of my indoor track/marathon training buddies because Mary's traveling for work, but Wynne and Kristen were there and we had a nice reunion. Kristen ran Boston and this was her first track workout since then, but I was worried since she has a lot of speed from her days as a D1 soccer player!
The workout was just 6x800 again, but we were supposed to do them a few seconds faster than last week. I let Kristen and Wynne lead on the first one and the first lap of the second, but then I could feel them slowing down after we came through the 400. I felt okay and wanted to try to get us back on target pace, so I bit the bullet and took over pacing duties. This is a big deal for me because I tend to hang back a lot in track workouts (and marathons, and long runs...) The girls were happy with my pace so I ended up leading all of the rest of the repeats. We were fairly consistent but not as much as we had been in the winter. I'm sure it's because we're all just getting back into shape. I'm so bummed that I'm going to miss all the club workouts this summer! I hope to find a club in NYC that has a few people around my pace, but I'm not holding my breath.
Anyway, I'm pleased with the workout and I know I have to be careful not to go overboard with mileage this week now that I'm (knock on wood) starting to feel better. I've vowed to keep at least one or two cross-training days in my schedule as long as I have access to a pool the next few weeks...
