Ryan Andrew

My son, Ryan Andrew, was born a month ago on July 21 at 10:56pm. He weighed 7lbs 7 oz, was 21 inches long and has been healthy and growing ever since. I am now ready to get back into my training and wanted to pick up this blog again, even though I have a ways to go before I am back in racing shape. I ran 3-5 miles 5-6 days a week, although at a slower and slower pace, up until 27 weeks through my pregnancy. At that point, Ryan decided it would be fun to jump up and down on my sciatic nerve, which ended my running if I wanted to be able to walk normally. After a few weeks letting it recover I did the elliptical trainer, swam and walked a lot to try and keep myself sane without running for the remaining weeks of pregnancy. Using the advice of my doctor I took 2 weeks off after Ryan was born. The first week back I ran/walked every other day and for the past one and a half weeks I have been running 3-6 miles 6 days a week, mostly with the high school girls cross country team I coach. I am still working hard to do fairly short runs at a almost normal pace, about 8 to 8:30 minute miles (I normally run about 7:15 - 7:45 for easy runs), but am enjoying running again so much. I am planning on running a 5k Oct. 1, with the goal of running fast enough to not be too ashamed of my time. I am hoping to back in true racing shape for the spring and summer races.

Ann, I just wanted to send along a big congratulations!!!!!! I tried to comment the other day, but there was a problem with the comment mechanism on your blog (which we fixed). This is our second running-blogs/eliterunning baby (www.running-blogs.com/jenandmats was the first), but there is another one on the way soon. Hopefully all of you can draw inspiration from one another and maybe trade tips. You should find out what Shayne and Alan Culpepper do to get their babies sleeping through the night, because they seem to do it quite successfully (I've seen this mentioned in interviews twice now).

Good luck with your return to running and it's great to have you back!
