Waiting and a workout

Right now I'm in Wisconsin waiting for the rest of our school's contingent to join me here. I always travel to nationals separately from the team, because they don't book their flights until the last minute (the NCAA pays for them), which is expensive. This is the second time this year, though, that I've gotten to our final destination smoothly and they haven't. Today's problem is that their flight from Chicago to Appleton, WI was cancelled. They're driving up (it's less than 200 miles), but something like this also happened during cross country. I told them they should stick with me from now on...

I'm going to be in Wisconsin until Sunday. Even though it looks like many other places in the Midwest so far (I've only covered about two miles of road outside the airport), I'm excited to be in Wisconsin, because this is a state I've never hit before. And so far it gets good scores because they had extensive recycling in the airport, and there's a huge grocery store behind our hotel which is employee-owned.

We have two women competing here. Both will run the 1,500 and one will double back in the 5,000. They're both ready to go and I'm excited to watch them run.

This morning, because I didn't know what kind of running opportunities I would have here, and because I am missing our group's workout tomorrow night, I did a little track workout. I have felt so awful lately that I didn't have high hopes. I thought I'd just try to do 4 x 1,600 in 7:00 or faster, with 1:00 rest. I figured that even if it wasn't fast, it's better than the easy running I do most of the time. Yesterday was the first day in a long time that I've felt pretty good running. I ended up doing 15 miles total, plus some crosstraining. I was expecting to be pretty tired this morning, but I surprised myself. I did my 1,600s in 6:42, 6:30 (too fast, so purposely slowed down), 6:36, and 6:28. The effort on the last two was perhaps a little harder than it should have been, but I think it wasn't far off, and it was a good workout.

I've felt so bad for the past few weeks that I was wondering what was wrong with me. I've started taking my liquid iron consistently again, and maybe that is finally kicking in. I haven't had my iron levels tested recently, but since I've never been tested without being told I'm anemic, I'm pretty sure I am.

In other news, P graduated from Tufts this past weekend...and Northeastern sent me a diploma...by accident, I think. I am finishing my last class at the end of June, but I guess they got confused. There was some question about whether I needed another class to graduate or not (they just had their May graduation), but they told me I did, so I'm taking one. Luckily it's a good one, otherwise I'd be frustrated, because they aren't cheap! I'm assuming they'll mail me another diploma when I really graduate (in August), but who knows. This is pretty representative of my overall experience with the school's various administrative offices.

... that's a nice and solid 4x1mile :-)

Great workout Alison! Glad to hear you are feeling better. My rule about iron supplements is - when in doubt, take them. Extra iron (to some degree of course) is not going to hurt! :)

Anyway, congrats to you (kind of :) and P for graduation! You both must be very excited!

NICE WORKOUT!!! I would be super pumped with that...goal pace = 7 min; average pace = much faster!!!

Alisha:

Hi, um, not related to this entry at all, but I really really hope you have photos of the women's 1500 finals because my friends described a sort of diving finish...? Well hope you aren't too wet!

sweet workout, alison!! it's awesome to see you blogging again :)

Alison,

I just wanted to add my congratulations regarding yours and P's impending (or already happened by now?) graduations. So, CONGRATULATIONS! What a huge accomplishment!

Nice workout, and I'm happy to see you're happy about your running!

yeah, university administrative offices don't always have it together... it's a shame since they are in the 'higher education' business!

Hey Alison,

I was wondering if you would be interested in doing a product review on your blog. Feel free to shoot me an e-mail and we can discuss.
