Working hard

I don't have time for a full update right now, but I'll squeeze one in while I'm waiting for my turn in the shower...

First of all, we have a new blogger, Jacob, who I will add to the menu on this page as soon as I get a chance.

There are a lot of interesting things going on in my life that I can't write about, so instead I will write about the less interesting stuff--my running. I have been working very hard for the past three weeks. I'm nowhere near the mileage I used to run, but I am doing a lot of crosstraining (most days, for an hour or two) and running about 60 miles per week. Compared to what I was doing, it's a lot, and my legs feel it every time I start a run.

Despite being tired all the time (not in a bad way), I can feel myself getting into better shape. Last week, I struggled to break 60 in my 300s, and this week I broke 80 in one of my 400s. I know that isn't fast by a lot of people's standards, but it's fast for me right now and all that matters is that it's an improvement.

I'm in the working-out-a-lot phase of my training. It's tiring, but I'm just happy that I've kept it up for nearly four weeks. I've had little bursts of good training here and there since we moved here a year and a half ago, but this is the most consistently motivated I've been since 2005. I just hope I can keep it up!

I still don't love running here at all, but I am finding ways of coping with it. After two run-ins at the Powderhouse Rotary in two days, though, I came home and told P that if we live here too long, I'm going to die there. In both cases, cars ran a red light and/or a stop sign, and then got mad at me/us in very obnoxious ways, for crossing the street when we had the right of way. You don't see as much of that behavior in small towns, because chances are that if one were to have a road rage moment, one might run into that person again in another setting. Sigh.

The shower's available, so that's all for now.

Hi Alison, I am looking forward to catching up with you in person very soon so I can here about the interesting things in your life. So glad to read your update! I would not take breaking 80 for granted. That's great. I am happy to hear your training has been so consistent. With your busy schedule I know it must be a constant battle. Don't let those drivers get you down. Keep up the great work and see you soon!

Beth:

Alison!!! I'm so glad you are back! I didn't notice until now (I've never tried the RSS feed thing) so I was very excited to give your link a try and see you've been back for a while!

Anyway, great to hear that you are training so hard and (of course) working really hard too. Looking forward to hearing all about it as we follow along!

Meghan:

Yippee for running and cross-training! Out of curiosity, what kind of cross training are you doing?

I hope all the "other" stuff in your life is going well!

Powderhouse Rotary is a complete death trap for both cars and pedestrians. A Tufts student died . . . . . and there have been no changes.

Keep it up Alison. You'll progress quickly if you keep squeezing those workouts in.

I have blog that you and the others on the list may be interested in. It's located at coachjoeenglish.wordpress.com . I blog on marathon running, ultra running and triathlon.
